The Bank Holiday of June 2008 was... well, I guess you could call it the start of our love affair with Achill Island!
Its a pretty long drive over to Achill Island... about 3.30 mins from Mullingar, but it always results in a great trip.
The weather was amazing as you can see from the photos below, around 25 degrees...it was perfect for the few nights camping. There is a pretty good camping site right beside Keel beach called Keel Sandybanks.
We got one day of decent waves over the wknd, the rest were flat but thats the beauty of Achill... there are plenty of things to see, especially when the sun is shining. I'd recommend a trip to Keem bay; an isolated beach accessed only by a cliffside road!
There was about 7 of us altogether, we did alot of cooking & drinking at the campsite which kept the cost down.
When the sun goes down there are a few nice pubs to sample the porter...the Annexe is a good bar, usually very busy and always home to a good music session.
Achill is a great location; it can bring in some sweet waves, it frees your mind from normal day to day life in modern Ireland and its got to be up there as surf/holiday locations go!
