With the great weather last weekend I just had to get on the road and hit the water! I headed from Galway and stopped to check out Spanish point on the way. There was some nice clean waves rolling in, about 2-3ft at times and there were a good few surfers and swimmers in the water...I decided to keep going, hoping Doonbeg would be a bit quieter, it was... although it was the busiest ive ever seen it, with both sunbathers and surfers!
I didnt even check the waves before suiting up... if theres a wave at Spanish, you're almost guaranteed a bigger one at Doughie and the wind was perfect offshore all day! I wasn't disappointed, the waves were sweet, 4-5ft at times and caught a few nice ones.
I dont know about most people but for me if I get just a few decent rides in one session then its a good one and Im satisfied. If I compare this to me about a year ago its totally different, I guess im more selective about which wave I take now and I dont spend my time wearing myself out trying to catch every ripple that comes my way!
One thing I noticed last Saturday was the amount of Beginner surfers at Doonbeg, now Im not one to tell people where or where not to go...but Doughmore can be quiet dangerous even for the seasoned surfer. There can be very stong rips and the swell height can change very suddenly. I guess what Im saying is just be careful at this break if your a beginner, always go with somebody with a bit of experience and perhaps go to some of the more safer breaks such as Spanish Point until you feel you can manage the perils mentioned above.
