Surf Spots: Achill Island

Achill Island is one of my favourite destinations to go for a few days surfing... with three different beaches to choose from you'll nearly always find a wave. On the south side there's Keel Beach and on the north you've got Doogort and Silver Strand.


Keel is my favourite beach to surf and is south west facing so should pick up most south and westerly swells and works well with a north or north east wind.

There isn't much trouble on Keel Beach apart from a rip towards the cliffs especially after big storms but the beach is long enough for a safe surf. I had a crazy session at Doogort one Halloween.

Summer Time time brings in a nice mellow wave which is perfect for beginners but it can get very crowded with swimmers so watch where your dropping in!
