With a few days off for the Easter break I decided to head for a couple of nights on the west coast and Clare was the destination... we set up camp in the West Coast Lodge, Lahinch for the Weekend.
Arrived at Lahinch at about 4.30 on Saturday evening, I had never stayed in the West Coast Lodge before but I heard good reports... it didn't disappoint, the owners - Duncan and Carol are so friendly and are happy to chat away and offer their advice & thoughts... John took a shine to their gorgeous dog Annie! If your staying in Lahinch I'd defo recommend this place.
The minute I got to the lodge I took a sneaky peek along the shoreline to see what the wave situation was like... it looked good so I suited up in the lodge, grabbed the board and wandered down the street... greeted on the beach with some nice sets of mainly 3 footer waves... I was happy out! I caught a nice few waves around the 3 foot range, dropped in and surfed along the face. Got a bit to eat in the Cornerstone and had a few pints in Kenny's that night.
On Sunday the waves weren't great, they were fairly messy so myself and John went to the Cliffs of Moher. Its a great way to pass a few hours if the waves are not the best. I was hoping to see some waves roll in at the cliffs but nothing was happening. That evening the waves were still messy at Lahinch so I met Colin at Spanish Point. The waves here were cleaner and mostly in sets although small enough around the 2 foot range. but it was still a nice session. Sunday night we grabbed some food in Kenny's and a couple of pints while the Surfathon auction was going on and finished up with a few in Flanagans.
The swell and wind that came in on Monday was off the charts! anywhere exposed was too messy to surf, I heard a few of the locals around Lahinch and Fanore knew of a good spot but its for the more experienced!... so didnt venture out. We took a look at Fanore but it was big enough and wild. We checked out Aileens to see the wave there at first hand... we could see it rolling in but it wasn't fully working that day... not that we were going for it! but it would be great to see the guys doing a bit of tow-in surfing.
This was a pretty good weekend and a nice few waves were caught... along with a couple of pints when the sun went down! Lahinch is a great spot for a long weekend and for those of you heading there check out the West Coast Lodge, I'll be back soon!
